Adventure playgrounds have been around long before our time... we just didn't "realize" they existed since it isn't something we "created".
Adventure playgrounds began in the 1930s in Denmark when C.T.Sorenson noticed that children preferred playing everywhere but on the traditional playgrounds he built.
Lady Allen in the UK began to notice similar situations where children were not on the commercial pieces of play structures and after being inspired by Denmark - began building Adventure Playgrounds - a space where play, risk, mess, leadership all existed without the presence of adults or someone telling them "no"
I have been inspired by the Adventure Playgrounds in the UK as well as more closely, the play:ground - The Yard on Governors Island in NYC for years and wanted that here.... But how?
